On the cinematic art of the soul - Alfred Hitchcock as a psychologist

21 October 2020, 19:00 - 20:00

Web Lecture 4
Prof. Dr. Dirk Blothner

The self and the other

Hitchcock's films don't try to pretend that we're "gentlemen of our own house." On the contrary. His famous cinematic narrative techniques "Suspense" and "Surprise" are so common because they make it clear that people are being attacked by effects that they are not aware of. In the moment of surprise, something is revealed that had previously worked in secret. And when we watch a suspenseful scene of a character who unsuspectingly puts himself in danger (suspense), we experience that he is determined by other effects. The ego does not have the other in view and yet is determined by him.
Excerpts from the following films: Young and innocent, Saboteurs, 39 Steps, The Man Who Knew Too Much, The Invisible Third
